Mission:
Tales of the Unawakened
Location: Minnesota, Rochester.
Timeline: Two days after leaving Chicago
Minnesota, Rochester
Jaclyn, pulled into the caravan park, and getting out of her van she locked it and went to the office. She figured she would stay a couple of nights. Hiring a powered site she took the map of the grounds and drove into the park itself. It was nearing dusk as she reversed carefully into the site and put the van in park. Climbing out of the drivers seat she set about plugging in the van to the site. As she moved around the van, she noticed a elderly man further up the row studying her closely.
She sighed. The Police would be arriving shortly, she was sure. She had run into men like the man before. They were suspicious about young people traveling alone. She knew why. There were always runaways these days. Teenagers who had been declared mutants, either truthfully or falsely. She felt for them, mutants or not they were still people. Her mother and she had discussed it when she was 12. She knew her father felt differently, as did Yasmine Step-monster from hell, but her mother believed that no matter what, they were still people and to be treated with respect. And Jaclyn always tried to do that.
One of her classmates had been outed as a mutant. And Jac had always sat with her at lunch when others would jeer and taunt. Then one day, she was gone. And Jac had no idea where Emily had gone but she knew she was running.
And now Jac was running, for a different reason, but running none the less. Finishing up she flushed the septic with a hose and then she went back into the van and locked the van behind her. She was sitting down to a microwave dinner when there was a sharp RAP, RAP on her van door. A glance at the clock had her rolling her eyes. “One whole hour” she muttered and stood and went to the door. She peeked through the curtain and sighed at the sight of the two police officers.
She opened it and faced the two officers. The tall male officer had skin, the color of rich chocolate and looked like a young Denzel Washington. His uniform was to her eyes neat and tidy. The female officer at his side was blond and blue eyed and Jac was sure it threw people off. “Good Evening Officers” She said politely.
“Miss.” The male officer said. “We received a complaint about you.”
“A complaint?” Jac asked curiously. “I have only been here about an hour and a half.”
“Yes,” he seemed to wince. “Apparently there is an issue with your being here.”
“I paid for two nights, up front in cash. I am on my way to Los Angeles. My Aunt lives there, and I am going to finish High school there.”
“Can we see some identification?” the female officer.
Jaclyn nodded and picked up her purse and pulled out her ID and the Registration and ownership papers and handed them over.
The Female officer took the items, looked at them and then stepped off to the side, pulling her radio up to her mouth.
Jac sighed. “I am 16. And I am not going back to Chicago. You can take that to the bank Officer.”
The male officer grinned, a flash of white teeth. “Running away?”
“To my aunt’s in LA. From my father and stepmother. I am old enough to make my own decisions.” Jaclyn said softly.
The female officer came back and handed the items back. “You are listed as a missing person Miss Morrison.”
“Oh, so they actually reported me?” Jaclyn asked curiously. “When?”
The female officer named a date.
And Jaclyn laughed “A week after I left?” She got out as she put the paperwork back in her purse and finished laughing. “I was gone a week when they reported me missing, guess the neighbors noticed I was gone!”
The two officers exchanged looks. “We should take you in and home Miss Morrison” the male officer said.
“You should but I won’t go. And if you do, I will simply run away again. And knowing my father, he will sell my motorhome and she will sentence me back to the basement bedroom.”
The two officers exchanged looks. The woman nodded at the male. Who said “Sorry to disturb you Miss, have a good night.” they inclined their heads and left.
Jac watched them leave and then stepped back into her van and locked the door. Sighing she noted her dinner was now cold. She considered it and then tossed it in the bin. Suddenly she was no longer hungry. She made the call there and then. She would stay the night and leave the next day.
Jaclyn shifted and pulled the privacy curtains across the windshield and windows and then moved to the bunk beds and began to prepare for bed. She had just finished changing when she heard an angry voice from outside the van.
"Bloody teenagers! Should have been arrested! Probably doing drugs and tricks!"
Jaclyn shuddered and quickly shoved her feet back into her sneakers as the van shook suddenly with the hard banging on the door.
Fumbling she picked up her cell and dialed 911.
As she did so, the banging got louder and the voice began shouting obscenities.
"911, how may I direct your call?"
"Hello, I am at the Caravan park in Rochester. Its called the Sunny Side. And there is a man yelling and banging on my van. Two police officers just left here..."
"Can the man get to you?" The lady from 911 asked.
"I have locked the door. He is shaking the door."
The operator could hear the swearing and banging and had already sent a message to the two officers. "Police are on the way."
"T-thank you."
"Stay on the line okay?" The operator said.
"Okay" Jaclyn sat on the bunk she used as her bed and pressed against the wall.
As she sat there the man kept rampaging outside. Then there was another sound, the voice of the male officer telling the man to cease and desist. The van stopped shaking and the mans voice was lowered. "They are here, thank you ." She hung up the call.
Jaclyn risked a peek out of the curtains and saw him being led away by the male officer. The female officer walked to the van.
Jaclyn beat her to the door and opened it. "Officer."
"Miss Morrison, apologies for the interruption. He will not bother you again tonight. Are you alright?"
Jaclyn nodded. "I.. think I should leave."
"No, he is being taken in for the night. Drunk and disorderly. You will be safe tonight. We will come past every few hours okay?"
Jaclyn nodded "Thank you Officer."
The woman gave her a smile and headed off after her partner.
Jaclyn retreated into the van and relocked the door. And set about securing the Van and then bushed her teeth put her phone on charge, then she turned off the lights and then she climbed into her bunk.
Jac lay there in the dark, listening to the sounds outside the Van and eventually she drifted off to sleep. Morning always came too soon.
The next morning, she woke, showered, dressed, emptied the waste water from the van and disconnected the power. She then, eating an apple for breakfast, checked out got her 2nd night reimbursed and headed for the highway. She would drive for a bit before pulling over to do her school work. So much for two peaceful nights. As she drove she considered things and then she made another decision. She needed to get a dog.
