Mission: Tales of the Unawakened
Location: Amityville, Long Island, New York
Timeline: Present Day

Mattias awoke happy. Today, in recognition of all he had been through, both of his parents were taking the week off from their jobs, and the family was going to have a little mini vacation. First thing on the itinerary…

Adventureland!

Mattias had always loved going to the amusement park that was a staple attraction for the island. Almost centrally located, people came from all over Long Island to enjoy it.

After washing his face and getting dressed, Mattias went downstairs to have breakfast. His parents were already there, in the kitchen, getting things ready.

'Morning Mama, morning Papa!" He greeted them happily.

“Good morning!” Baeryn said as she turned from the stove and gave both of her men a happy smile. She was wearing a pair of cutoff jean shorts and a white short-sleeved blouse that was worn over a bright orange tank top, and was tied in a knot at her waist. Her sun-kissed brown hair was pulled up into a messy pile on her head, held in place with a colorful butterfly clip. She definitely looked ready to enjoy some sun and fun after everything that her family had been through.

While it pained her to see the center of her world suffering through his injuries, she was so proud of the way that he just kept fighting. If he could deal with his pain with a smile, she could do no different. She set the plates on the table in front of them, French toast sticks and sausage links, then poured them each a glass of chocolate milk, before getting her own food and sitting down with them. “I hope you slept well, because we’ve got a big day planned.”

David smiled at their son as he rolled into the kitchen. "Morning, Bubba!" He and Mattias shared their personal fistbump with flourish, then he returned to his mug of black coffee. "Did you sleep well?"

Mattias smiled even larger when his parents greeted him in reply. While he knew that they were not his biological parents, the amount of love he felt, both for and from them, made him wish they were. "I did!" He said happily. "I'm so excited to go to the amusement park!"

“Just don’t wear yourself out before we get there,” his mother teased, giving him a bright smile. It did her heart good to see her son so happy, even through all of the trials he’d suffered through. “I am sorry that your friend had to move away. Maybe you can get her on a video call for a bit while we’re there? I know it’s not exactly the same, but...” Baeryn shrugged a bit awkwardly.

Mattias nodded, then shrugged. "With the time difference, Zo would be fast asleep by now. It's late night tonight or early morning tomorrow where she is. I can't remember which one."

David gave their son a comforting look. "Don't get disheartened, Bubba. When your mom and I first met, we were in different time zones too. The first few months of our relationship, we were constantly juggling the right time to call each other. And this was before cell phones really got big like today." He smiled as he looked over at his beautiful wife.

"All we had to go on for looks were a few photos that we mailed each other, through the post office."

Baeryn laughed heartily as she smiled at her husband. “Ah, the good old days of phones being attached to the wall with long cords that were always getting twisted and tangled. And snail mail, hoping that you had enough stamps to cover the postage. It’s definitely much easier to keep in touch with people these days.”

David reached out and pulled Baeryn to him, hugging her as he looked up into her eyes. "Had I had enough postage, I would've mailed myself, just to get with you sooner." He gave her a flirty wink as he spoke.

Baeryn blushed and gazed into David’s eyes. “That would have definitely been a lot of stamps. And likely a rough ride. I mean, have you seen how they treat special packages?” She teased, reaching up to caress his face gently, before giving him a sweet peck on the tip of his nose.

David made a soft approving sound when Baeryn kissed him. "I was special operations, baby, remember? I can take a few bruises. Besides," he said with a smirk. "You would've nursed me back to health."

Mattias grinned as he watched his parents. Though he had never had a girlfriend, he knew that his parents truly and completely loved one another. He hoped to, one day, have that same connection to someone else.

“I guess we’ll find out later, when you’re stiff and sore from the amount of walking around we’ll be doing today,” Baeryn said with a soft laugh. She then glanced over at Mattias and she blushed again. She gave David another quick kiss and pulled away gently to return to her breakfast. “So, is there anything specific that you want to do first, Matty?” she asked, smiling over at her precious son.

As Mattias took a mouthful of food, he thought about the question for a bit. Then, after he swallowed, he replied. "Well, I heard that they got a few new arcade machines in. I thought we could try those first?"

“That sounds like fun,” Baeryn said with a soft smile. She tried to be good with the video games, but they escaped her most of the time. Her two men were definitely better at them than she was, but that didn’t stop her from trying! Losing terribly at a game was worth the hours of smiles that she got from her son.

Mattias grinned broadly in excitement. He then started to eat a bit faster, all to get there sooner.
