Sam and Mary

Mission: The Factions
Location: Magic Kingdom
Timeline: 1988

Mary had just finished her first day at school. When she entered her apartment she ran to her room and threw her book bag on her king size bed and jumped into it with a bounce. Everyone had been very nice to her today, but Mary couldn’t help but feel like the adults had been told to be that way. Still it was a very nice change from the sisters. Lunch had been almost as overwhelming as her new apartment. A nice boy had helped her pick from the varied options in the lunch line. There had been something the boy had called soda with bubbles and it reminded her of the one time that her father had let her have champagne. This “Soda” came in all sorts of flavors so when Mary finished the first she tried another flavor for her second glass.

The little blonde girl’s classes had gone by without much of a problem. Most of her childhood had been filled with books, but then in Political Science came a subject that talked about something called social media, and how it impacted government today. Mary had no idea what they were talking about. Once the teacher understood this she simply took the young lady to a computer and showed her how to access New Findel’s network. It was as though an entire library had somehow been magically stored inside that small box.

Mary was reading using a “tablet,” on that very subject when she heard a chime. Aryel had told her that this meant that someone was at the door. So she walked over to the button the woman had shown her and pressed it.

An image of Lorde standing at the door popped up. “Hey, Mary, I brought you something, can I come in?”

Mary pressed the other button by the door and let her rescuer in the door. “It is good to see you, Lorde.” She curtsied.

Frederick brought his hands out from behind his back and showed Mary a black and white kitten. “Mary, meet Sam, Sam, Mary.” He handed his new student the freshly made bundle of joy. “He understands English and German. Once upon a time he was German. Possibly was human even. So you can talk with him using your abilities.” He reached over and scratched the kitten's head. “Okay Sam, say hi to the young lady okay?”

“Hello?” Mary could hear the voice quite clearly in her mind. As the little cat meowed at her.

“So you also speak German, Sam?” Her eyes opened wide. It would be nice to hear the mother tongue again.

“Ja ich spreche deutsch.” The kitten spoke the words carefully this time in his mind, because he had not spoken or heard German in some time.

Mary jumped up and down her golden locks bouncing with her. She began to chatter quickly to the cat in German about where he was from.

Same told her as much of his story as he could from his own perspective. Mary was riveted on every word. His words were most times in German, but when he could not recall the right word he would fall back on English.

Lorde let them carry on for a while. They seemed to be having fun. “So are you ready for me to make good on a promise I made you?”

“What promise is that Lorde?” Mary couldn't help but think he had already done quite a bit.

Frederick smiled brightly and put his face close to hers. “Time to go see that magic castle I told you about.”

-----

It was almost night time in nineteen eighty eight, This was a special event night at The Magic Kingdom, known as Night of Joy. Frederick’s plan was that no one would notice a man with a young girl and her tiny seeing eye dog and an event like that. Even if someone he knew was at this event the odds were less than one in a million that he might bump into them.

A holo-emitter made Sam look like a Chiwawa with a blue vest. Mary wore dark glasses that used cameras to show the world like normal to her. Lorde also wore dark sunglasses and his black floor length duster.

Frederick pointed up Main Street. “See that is Cinderella’s Castle. It is the centerpiece of this place.” Of course the first store he went into was to finnish the young lady’s look. He picked out a pair of mouse ears and put them on Mary’s head. “There, now you look the part.” He then walked the pair up the street to the castle. On the way as night fell a parade of vehicles came by with thousands of lights on them.

Both Sam and Mary watched the parade in amazement with Lorde. “Is this something that happens every day, Lorde? Sam wants to know.”

The madman smiled, “Everyday and sometimes more than once a day.” After they finished watching the parade they walked the rest of the way to the castle. Lorde pointed into the sky. “You might want to see this.” Tinkerbelle was flying out from the castle. Frederick had seen this many times, but today there was something different. He could not see any wires on the actress. This made him wonder if the actress was a mutant or being aided by one. That would be something for him to figure out some other day.

After giving the two the grand tour of the castle Lorde decided to take them on the People Mover. This ride gave a brief history of Disney and his dreams for the future. He explained to them that there was another park based on that plan called EPCOT.

The next ride he took the youngsters on was one of his personal favorites, “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Mary marveled at the animatronics and Sam liked the boat ride. Frederick even had the two singing along with the theme song for a short while.

When they exited the ride a man in a suit approached them. On his lapel Lorde noticed a very small set of mouse ears. Meaning this was most likely Disney’s plain clothes security force. Although something was wrong. They normally came in pairs. “Would you come with me Sir?”

Lorde had some weird standards and making trouble in one of the happiest places on earth was sort of against the rules for him. “Sure, what's the problem?”

The man led them away from the crowds and into an employee only area. “Well for starters we had reports that you had been acting strangely.”

Frederick shrugged, he couldn’t argue about that one most days. “Well I do tend to get into the act when I come here.”

Then the security guard lowered his glasses with one hand and put his other hand into his jacket. “Also we detected that you are a mutant.”

Lorde quickly scanned the man’s jacket. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing, but in a world filled with dangerous mutants it figured he would come across someone with a Neutralizer. Frederick lifted his hands up to show that he had nothing in them or at least that's what he wanted the man to think. “It isn’t against the rules to be a mutant here is it?”

“No but with three of you here clearly you are up to no good.” The man seemed intent on bringing the time traveling tourists to justice.

Lorde shook his head, “Buddy if you try and jerk that Rosco right now there won't be enough of you left to fill an Altoids tin.” He still wondered where in the Hell this guy got a weapon like that. Only two people had designs on it.

“Are you threatening me...” The man tried pulling out the neutralizer but before he could clear it Lorde fired a beam at him killing him instantly. He held up his wrist. “Aryel is this guy important to the timeline in some way?”

“He does not show up in any of my historical databases although that is a bit limited.” The AI explained.

Frederick quickly looked to see if the man had any identification on him. He found a driver's license and an FBI badge. Those still didn’t explain much but it still wouldn’t do to have this guy stalking him through time. After taking the kids home he returned to the scene. He held his hand out and as he promised disintegrated the man. All that was left was a small pile of ash as he had promised.
Later he would put the ashes in a tin. Then put that and the ID’s into an envelope and send them to a field office for the FBI.
