Unsinkable Sam

Mission: The Factions
Location: Atlantic Ocean
Timeline: World War 2

Near the docks the young black and white cat waited outside a door. Every day the cat would visit his friend when the sun came up and greet him. When the sailor walked out of his room the cat meowed loudly.

The Navy man looked down at him and spoke in German. “Well my little friend today we are going on a journey. You won't have to worry about food or shelter anymore. The tall blonde man picked up the cat and placed him into a black leather bag.

As the sailor walked onto the massive ship he let the cat know the name of his new home. “Well my little friend, welcome to the Bismark, the most powerful ship in the world.

For a short time everything seemed great for the cat. Even when his friend was busy there was always the cook to harass for something to eat or drink. Those good times soon became broken up by loud noises and the boat rocking back and forth and moving in strange ways. During this time the small cat would normally just hide in his friend's bed and hope for the best.

One dark day suddenly something made the ship lurch and the cat was tossed into the cold water. Paddling as hard as he could the little animal believed his days on the earth were numbered. Just as his strength began to give out and the water started to take him under a handpicked up the freezing cat and tucked him into a jacket. When the man spoke the cat didn’t understand him right away, but tried to thank him in his mother tongue. Of course long ago he had lost the ability to even speak German so all the Sailor heard was meow.

After a while the little cat came to understand he was on the ship named HMS Cossack. This ship was called a destroyer. The crew seemed equally as friendly to the little cat and even gave him a name, Oscar. So while little Oscar didn;t understand these people very well if he heard that name he knew there would likely be food or a scratch involved so he came running.

Again it would seem fate had other plans for the black and white seafarer. Once again the cat’s home began to shake and toss about. Although the brave cat tried to make his way back to a bed and ride out whatever was happening, he was instead tossed once again into that freezing salty water to die.

This time it was a crew member of the Cossack that had saved little Oscar. When the British Sailor was transferred to a new ship The HMS Ark Royal, he and the crew began to call the cat by a new name, “Unsinkable Sam.”

This ship always seemed noisy. It had birds that would take the sailors away for very long distances and then return. One of the crewmen called it an aircraft carrier. Other than the constant noises things seemed okay.

Of course this break was short and again his home became racked with explosions and rocked back and forth. For sure the cat thought, this must be the day, but soon after the ruckus had started most of the excitement seemed to be about repairing the ship.

Even though things had calmed down still the cat’s home was lost and he was tossed once again into the water. At least the water was not as cold as before. Sam swam in the water for a long time with no help until it came upon a floating plank. It was quite a time before someone from the Ark Royal found him and took him someplace dry.

-----

Old Sam could feel his age laying out in the garden. The sun on his fur felt nice. After taking a deep breath the aged cat knew his time had come. No one would ever know many of the great adventures he had. Not even his children or grandchildren. Just before the slightly heavy set cat stood up to take that final walk into the nearby lush green a voice spoke to him.

“Are you sure that’s what you want to do?” A man stood at the gateway to the garden smiling at Sam. “I’m just saying there is a better option.”

-----

“So you're telling me this cat is a mutant?” Lorde read through the file, but was still somewhat in a state of disbelief.

Aryel laughed, “Oh yes. If my guess is correct that cat wasn’t born a cat.”

Lorde nodded, “So chaos ability like scapegoat?”

“Yes exactly my Lorde.” The small woman nodded.

“Going to have to be careful with this one. Need to keep the history or we won’t know about this cat to start with.”

-----

The blonde haired, hazel eyed man walked over and kneeled before the heroic cat. “If you would like I can make you whole again, but it would have to be our little secret. Also I will be taking you to a brand new home.”

Sam was way too old and tired to argue, Besides he just didn’t want to die in front of his owner. So he jumped into the man’s lap. “Meow.”

Lorde laughed. “I can understand you up here.” The strange man tapped his temple. “At least for now. I also plan on fixing that for you permanently.”

In a flash the two were gone. Then in almost the same moment Lorde reappeared with Sam dead in his arms. He walked over to the house and knocked on the door. A man half asleep in his fifties answered the door. “I am sorry Sir is this your cat?”
