Mission:
The Factions
Location: Zach and Will's Condo/Geraldine's
Timeline: Current
Will had gone for a run then come back and took a shower, washing off the sweat, and other bodily fluids, not all of which were his.
After putting on a pair of faded jeans and a Seahawks hoodie, that Zach had given him for Christmas, he went over to the bed where his boyfriend was still snoring. He shook his shoulder. "Come on sleepyhead,' he called out as he continued to gently shake the other man. "It's close to Nine."
Zach did the awakening snore, "Wh... what oh yeah I should get up I have work in a few hours, do you want me to make you some breakfast or lunch?"
"We were going out remember? I mean not that I mind, but you don't have to cook all the time."
"Well, I like cooking, though going out does seem nice. Where did we decide we were going yesterday?"
"We didn't exactly, but I was thinking Geraldine's I want the corn beef hash and eggs, and I love their biscuits."
"Sounds good, let me shower and get dressed," Zach said while getting out of bed showing he wasn't wearing anything walking towards the shower.
"You should sleep that way more often, even when we're only sleeping. You look really good. But I might just be a bit biased."
"Well I try to keep fit for a reason," Zach said turning over his shoulder winking at Will.
"You're doing a good job. I, uh, talked with my dad earlier today, told him about us. That we're living together and that we're officially boyfriends. He was really excited."
"Huh ok, that's good then," Zach said kind of awkwardly.
"He wants to meet you," Will offered, "Actually, he wants to pay for us to come out there next weekend, even offered to pay for first-class tickets.
"Uh-huh ok," Zach paused leaning in the doorway, "Do you want to go I'm... I'm not really against it."
"Yeah, I do. I mean if you're really okay with it. I'd like to see them and I'd like to show you, New York. There is just so much to do there."
"Well I mean it can't be the worst thing, plus going to New York can't be that bad right?"
"Not at all, and have you ever flown first class before?"
"I've never flown," Zach said sheepishly.
"I told my dad that. You'll love it, I promise, but when we fly to Hawaii, you'll see what it's like to fly coach."
"Is it like how it is in movies all fancy-like?"
"Yeah, exactly like that. Really wide seats, free food and drinks, booze if you're old enough, it's going to be so fun. And you'll love my parents too. Except that they have this morbid curiosity about gay sex, so they might ask you some embarrassing questions."
"That is really odd of them, they... they don't ask about our sex life do they?"
"They do, but I don't tell. Not really any of their business."
"They sound weird if I am honest."
Will shrugged his shoulders, "You'll get no argument from me there. I think if I ever gave them details, I won't, they'd back off. I'll go call them and let them know we're coming. Why don't you get ready?"
"Yes sir," Zach said with a light chuckle and went into the shower. Fifteen minutes later Zach walked out wearing Some black skinny jeans and a form-fitted white vertical striped button-up tee shirt.
"You clean up nice as they say in the movies, let's go get some breakfast. When do you have to be at work again?"
"Two they have me closing again," Zach said kind of depressed.
"That should give us plenty of time. Did you want to do something after we eat?"When they had reached Will's car he said, “I almost forgot I’m going to need to get a sticker for my car, what time does the office close today?”
“Probably 5 not many people have cars here.”
“Well, this is Seattle after all. Not as bad as New York but it’s close. So what do you want to do after breakfast?”
“Probably lay in bed for a bit then go to work. We were up for quite a bit last night.”
“Yeah, we were. You aren’t complaining are you?”
Zach laughed really hard and deep, “No, no I am not.”
“Good, neither am I, but tonight, maybe we should, you know, try this novel thing called sleep, well sleep and cuddle maybe. You mind?”
“Well, we could cuddle before I work which is what I was hoping for.”
“Cuddling gets my vote,” Will said as he started the car and drove out of the parking lot. “I’m going to get the rest of my stuff today. There’s not much, mostly my TV, which I figured could be in the other bedroom. What do you think?”
“I like that idea,” Zach said getting out his phone for directions.
“I’ve been there before, I think I know the way, but I haven’t been there from your… our place. So that might not be a bad idea. You know, getting directions.”
“Did I tell you what happened at Starbucks yesterday?”
“No, what happened?”
“I’ve been going in there for almost as long as we’ve been together, maybe longer and I got to know this barista named Finn. Nice guy, and totally straight by the way and he didn’t show up for work, didn't call in sick or anything. And the new guy Chance, he was almost flirty. Sorta kinda. I just got to thinking about those other kids from school that have gone missing. And kind of got weirded out like I don’t know someone was watching me. I know, that sounds like paranoia and I know it was just my imagination running wild, but it was still strange.”
“Sounds kind of creepy if I am honest.”
“Creepy like some weird shit is going on, or weird as in I should go see a shrink before I move in with you?”
“Like weird shit going on, though therapy is never a bad thing.”
“I’ve never really been, but… okay speaking of weird and changing the subject just a little, but do you want to do some kind of couples therapy? Not that we have any problems. Yet. But I know it’s not like some romance novel, sooner or later some shit is going to happen, and then who knows. But maybe if we start seeing someone before the shit hits the fan then we’ll know how to deal with it. Or is that just inviting trouble?”
That feels like we are admitting defeat in our relationship even though there is nothing wrong. But if we both went to therapy with different therapists I think we will have ways of dealing with it, plus I would help with whatever feelings I have about my parents that I even hide from myself.” Zach said setting his phone down on his leg while he started slouching.
“Speaking of which, what are you going to tell them about me? You said they were coming out in a couple of weeks.”
“Probably that you're my friend who lives with me, and if they visit we are going to have to move the couch into the office and say you stay on that.”
“Will let out a long sigh and he put a hand on Zach’s shoulder. “Look, it’s your life and I’ll go along with the charade for your sake and because I love you. But, that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I’m part of your life now, but it doesn’t feel like it when you have to hide who you are, what we are. I get where you’re coming from, but at some point, the truth is going to come out, and what are you going to do then?”
“Probably run from it again but this time with you. I don’t know I am just so uncomfortable telling them that i’m gay especially since they are hard-core Catholics.” Zach sighed as well, “I just don’t know how to deal with the rejection that they are going to give me.”
“You have me, you know that right? I’m not going to reject you. I’ll help you deal with it. That’s what a friend does and we’re more than just friends now.”
“I… I know it’s just hard, I don’t know how to explain it.” Zach said while running his hand through his hair and shaking his head.
Will focused on his driving for a few minutes as traffic was suddenly stopped and go, not an unusual occurrence even on a weekend morning “You don’t have to explain it you know.”
“Yeah, though sometimes I think it would help if I actually could.”
“I’m no psychiatrist,” Will said as he pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant, but do you want to try?”
“No, not right now at least, I believe the mentally healthy way of doing it would be in a controlled situation.”
“Okay, I get that,” Will said as he eased the car to a stop and unbuckled his seatbelt. “You have someone in mind to talk to?”
“That would also be a no, I'd have to look through my health insurance to see who is available,” Zach said as he stuffed his phone into his pocket and unbuckled his seatbelt.
“What about someone from school, you wouldn’t have to go through your health insurance then. Do you have your own, or are you on your parents?”
“The restaurant has good health insurance so I am on my own.”
“Then I’m cool with that. You have a driver’s license/’
“Yeah I do, I need it to work.”
“Good, I’ll get you a spare set of keys for the car. Is that okay?”
“That would actually be really nice, though I would rather just get my own car just so we didn’t have to share.”
”I wish I could help with that, but I don’t want to take any money from mom and dad. Not that they wouldn’t help, but I want to be on my own.”
“I know what you mean.”
“So, I guess you are on your own in that regard.”
“We’ll work our way toward it… Hopefully.”
“You can drive mine, ours until you get one, “ Will said as he walked up to front door and opened it holding it open for his boyfriend,
“Well thank you, my good sir,” Zach said.
Will’s fingers entwined with Zach’s “That’s what boyfriends do right. I don’t really like wearing labels, but I like wearing that one.
A portly-looking woman greeted them with a smile. “Welcome to Geraldine’s,” she said. “Did you boys want to sit in a booth or at the counter?”
“Booth,” Will said, speaking for them both.
“What are you thinking of having?” Zach asked Will while looking over the menu.
“The corned beef hash, I’ve had it here a couple of times, it’s really good. What are you thinking?”
“You know I’m a sucker for french toast.”
“Yeah, I do,” Will replied, and I like how they make it here.’
The waitress took their order, which included apple juice for Will, and a coffee for Zach. “So, you want to talk about anything in particular?
“Nothing that serious, though how did going back to your roommates go yesterday.”
“Sam wasn’t all that happy about it, but at least he didn’t freak out about it. I avoided talking to the others, I guess we’ll find out when I go get the rest of my stuff.”
“Yeah, I guess then, that makes me kind of nervous if I am honest.”
“Why would that make you nervous?” Will asked as he dropped the menu and places his hand down on top of Zach’s, “what are they going to do?”
“I don’t know they might throw your stuff out, I've heard of some people do that.”
“They can be dicks, but they’re not like that. I mean we could wind up on Judge Judy, I suppose. That was a joke, they’ll be okay. Really.”
“Well, I’m gonna hope for that.”
Will looked into his boyfriend’s eyes. “It’s going to be okay Zach, it’s all going to be okay. Our lives are pretty dull and I kind of like it that way.”
“Yeah, I do too.”
Then Will leaned forward and stole a kiss as their drinks arrived. After taking a sip of his juice, he asked, “So, when did you come out, how was it like?”
“I didn’t, I just left before I really had to.”
“Not even to friends back home?”
“No there was a party I went to and I guess I felt up a guy and someone said they had shared pictures through the school, I don’t know if they did but lots of people were staring the day after, and well I just assumed, I finished school and just took my parents’ car and left and then sold the car to get a down payment here while I was also working.”
Will furrowed his brow. “Have you talked to them since then? What did they say about the car?”
“Well no I haven’t talked to them since other than when they sent the letter saying they were coming over, and as far as I can tell they didn’t report the car as stolen.”
“Do you think they have any idea you’re gay? That you have a boyfriend?”
“Probably not.”
“How long has it been since you’ve seen them?”
“Probably two years, maybe two and a half.”
“So why now? Why are they contacting you now?”
“I don’t actually know it was just really weird.”
Their food arrived at that point and they started eating.
