Tuesday Evening

Haven House - Edgerton, Wyoming

Her first thought was ‘what time is it?’ The next was ‘what day is it?’ Jaclyn had woken in pitch darkness. She lay there quietly under the blankets which, she noted faintly, itched. What woke her was the sound of voices outside the room where she was.

“... the Reverend will want to meet her.” That was Carl’s voice. “She would be a good option for him.”

“He has already summoned Michael and Mary, we have time to prepare her for him.”

“He doubts our abilities to bring him non-mutant children, Monica. The last three...”

“Were aberrations. And we know that Simon, Peter, Michael and Mary are not mutants. And he needs them to spread the word.”

“She has been asleep a while... Did we overdo the dosage?”

“No, it was fine, and we will just have to monitor her. The Flunitrazepam will have helped clear her memory of the other night.”

There was a soft scuffing sound and Jac let her eyes close as she heard the door open.

A person entered the room and sat on the edge of the bed. Monica’s hand gently shook her shoulder “Jaclyn sweetie? Are you okay?”

“Hhmph?” Jac mumbled as she pretended to wake up slowly. “Mmmp.. Mrs Elwys?” she let her words slur and slowly opened her eyes.

“Oh sweetie, it's okay.. Are you feeling better now?” Monica was acting the part of a concerned adult who cared and Jac, could see right through her.

“I..feel groggy,” that much was true.

“Not surprising, you came down ill last night, throwing up and everything. You have slept most of the day away.”

“Artemis?”

“Kai has her, she loves dogs so has been taking good care of your puppy.” Monica smoothed back Jaclyn’s bangs from her forehead. “You must have been sick for a while for it to knock you out so.”

“I.. don;t know.” Jac mumbled.

“Well you rest up, if you are fine tomorrow morning, you will be good to start work. Kai will bring you some food if you want..”

Jac shook her head “hmm no... not hungry.”

Monica smiled and nodded. “Well sleep until breakfast, it will help.” she stood and left the room. Once outside she waved Carl further down the hall.

When the door closed, Jaclyn slid from the bed and padded to the door to listen.

“.. She was calm. Showed no memory of Monday night. Kai won’t tell her, she is too scared of the Reverend to blab. Jaclyn showed no panic and no desire to demand to talk to the police.”

“What about her Phone?”

“We will say she dropped it when she collapsed. It will be fine.”

Jac’s narrowed and she heard them go down the stairs, call out to Kai to lock up the house behind them. The front door closed and Jaclyn retreated to her bed where she sat for a moment collecting her thoughts. Yeah, time to get out of dodge.

She looked around the room, glad she had left her laptop locked in the van in one of the lockable storage compartments. She bet they had gone through the van while she was out.
She shoved her feet into her loafers and looked down at the very wrinkled clothing from Monday night. Sighing she slipped from her bedroom and headed down to the kitchen. She passed Mary’s room and could hear her snoring. Rolling her eyes she made it down the stairs and then through the living room to the kitchen.

Kai was sitting at the large deal table in the kitchen. Her head came up and her eyes went wide. At her feet Artemis was sleeping.

Jac placed a finger to her own lips for silence. Then she looked around carefully. And sat opposite the other teen. In a whisper she said “Anyone else here?”

Kai shook her head. “No.. they are all asleep.”

“I am going to say this once Kai, I remember what happened the other night and I am not staying. I am leaving as soon as I can.”

Kai nodded “I understand.”

“Do you want to come with me?”

Kai stared, and then she nodded mutely.

“Good. Pack your things. Do you have a bag?”

Kai nodded, “Yes, I... have a bag and my mother’s things.”

Jac tilted her head “Your mother?”

“She and I came here 3 years ago. And she vanished a few weeks after we got here.”

“You were?”

“10.”

“And since then you have been working here?”

Kai nodded “I.. get to go to school, but yes, to earn my keep and pay them back for not kicking me out.”

“Pack and we will give them time to think everything is good. Tomorrow night though, we are gone from here.”

“Where will we go?”

“North, then East.” Jaclyn said softly. “We will take Artemis and run back towards the East, they think I am going west so they may look there first.”

Kai nodded.

“Kai, who is the Reverend?” Jaclyn asked softly.

Kai was pale. “He is the man who pays their salaries, and yours if you work for them. He comes by every few days, and speaks with them and the others. Sometimes if there are others here, not like Mary and the men, he takes them with him. He runs the Church of Eternal Light”

“Others like me?”

Kai nodded. “He only takes people aged 16 and over. And only if he can prove they are... normal.”

Jac nodded. “Got it.” she muttered. “Ok so keep your head down and tomorrow night we are so gone ok?”

Kai nodded “Just be careful of Simon. I... heard him today, he said he is going to ask the Reverend to let him initiate you.”

“Oh that sounds like fun. Not” Jac stood and clicked her fingers, and Artemis jumped up and ran to her. Scoping up the puppy she gave Kai a smile. “Take care.”

Kai stood and headed for her room with a soft “You too.”

Jac retreated upstairs to her bedroom with Artemis in her arms.
