Finding a guardian

The MARTIN COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY was on her way west. Just off the I-90. So she pulled in and began her search for a dog. It was heartbreaking the number of animals who were there. Jaclyn had had a dog before but Yasmine had hated animals and so Henry had taken the family dog, a german shepherd when he had cut contact with the family.

So now Jaclyn walked down the path that wended its way around the pens and buildings. One of the workers walked ahead of her blathering about the different dogs. But Jaclyn used her eyes rather than her ears. She watched behaviour and more. And her gaze was drawn to one of the puppy pens. There was a bundle of black and white fur rolled on a mat with a chew toy.

“Uh.. excuse me?” she interrupted the woman. “That puppy?”

“Oh is a Bordoodle” The woman said “Cute right?”

Jaclyn nodded. “How old?”

“6 months” The woman studied her. “Interested?”

“Yes.” Jaclyn said and let the woman lead her into the pen.

30 minutes later, Jaclyn loaded up the cart with puppy food, toys, a collar and leash and a dog bed. The Shelter had all she needed. And all her new puppy needed.

She returned to the counter and began to fill out the paperwork.

“She needs a name” The woman said.

Jaclyn thought about it. “Artemis”

The woman smiled and nodded and wrote it on the registration paperwork. Then Jaclyn picked up the small bundle of fur and laughed as her face was licked. Placing the puppy on the floor and attaching the leash, stood up to pay for the puppy and items.

Once she had paid, she picked up her new items and with Artemis on her leash, headed back to her van.

She made sure Artemis went to the loo and then loaded things into the car, and then placed Artemis on the passenger seat, where the Pup instantly placed her paws on the windowsill and looked out the window, Jaclyn started the van and put her own seatbelt.

They drove for a short period, allowing Artemis to ge used to the Van before Jaclyn let her roam the cabin behind the driving area. Pulled into a rest area early in the afternoon, Jac walked Artemis on her leash and they spent the afternoon getting to know each other.
