Mission:
The Factions
Location: Bladerunner 2049 Premier
Timeline: 2017
Frederick had done a little research and had found a movie to take Sam and Mary to go see. This time he had a bit of an ulterior motive. The idea was to bring Sato more into the forefront of people’s minds. If given the chance he would likely mention a bullet point or two about his plans for the future of the rising company.
Mary spun around looking at herself in the mirror. Much of her life now still felt like something of a fairy tail. “Have you heard of this movie, Sam?” It wasn’t lost on her that the little black ball of fur secretly watched Netflix while she was at school.
“Yes, At least the first one had one of the people from Star Wars in it.” Sam hopped off the couch and came over to see Mary’s new outfit for the premier. It was a long red dress with white flowers.
“Star Wars? What is that?” Mary didn’t watch many movies or TV. She mainly focused on her studies and athletics.
The small cat shook his head in disapproval. “You really need to binge watch more. At least so you can be up on pop culture.”
Then Mary giggled and knelt down to Sam, “Isn’t that what I have you for?”
Again the little cat shook his head but he rubbed up against Mary’s leg. He couldn’t help but think that no matter what she cared for him.
-----
Lorde had summoned Jaques and Byte Mi. “You two understand what the game plan is here?”
Byte Mi nodded with a worried look on her face.
The mad bomber smiled, “Of course mon ami, We turn that place to rubble if anyone messes with the cat or the kid.”
“Yes and extract them if something happens to me.” Lorde looked at them both very seriously. It was something he rarely did in earnest. “Aryel has you both on autocall and recall so don’t worry about what you are doing for now.” Then he took a breath. “If everything goes well we shouldn’t need you at all.”
-----
The doorbell to Mary’s room rang and she ran to the door. She pressed the button and Lorde was standing there smiling. He was dressed in a white suit and red shirt. It was a mirror of what Mary was wearing. “So, how do I look?” He spun around showing off the suit to Mary and Sam.
“Very fancy Frederick.” Mary smiled and nodded excitedly. “Sam thinks it makes you look like a crime boss from a movie.”
Lorde laughed and took Mary’s hand and twirled her around. “Well it looks like they did a great job with this dress.” He had gone through some effort to make sure it had been age appropriate but still red carpet worthy. Then he gave Sam a look. “How come he isn’t ready?”
Mary looked at Sam then at Lorde, “He says he is not used to wearing a collar and it feels weird.”
The time traveler laughed knowing that feeling all too well. “Hey I gotta wear one also buddy. I don’t normally wear a tie either.” He pointed at his white tie. “I assure you we will take it off as quickly as possible okay?”
Sam nodded. Lorde opened the box with his collared tie. He put it on Sam. He liked that it had come with a fake red silk shirt collar to go with the white tie. Aryel had really gone the extra mile. Then he attached the long red leash to the collar. He could almost see the disdain on the little cat’s face. “This part is more for safety than anything else. I just don’t want you two getting separated.” or worse.
Then Lorde ran a small checklist through his head. Everything seemed to be in order. “Okay, gather round.” He transported them to 2017 with just enough time to get to the opening of the new movie. He showed the kids the new car. “I hope you like it. I decided to show it off at this event.” He had the decals added just the other day. The number eighty eight was painted in red and bits of orange on the hood.
“Sam said it’s old right?” Mary looked at the car. It was way bigger than most cars she had seen driving around the big city.
Frederick nodded, “So old it is named that way. This is an Oldsmobile Delta 88, you can just call her Delta.”
Mary’s eyes opened wide. “Is this car alive?”
Sam sniffed around the car. Something did seem odd.
Before Fred could answer the car honked twice. Sam’s back arched and then he ran behind Mary’s leg.
Lorde laughed. “Don’t worry little guy unless you scratch her up I am sure she will like you.”
Again the Delta honked twice.
-----
It had taken a little extra doing to get Sam into the Delta but once inside he climbed into Mary’s lap and settled in. When they pulled up to the event the line of cars was a bit long. Many of them were high end sports cars, but most were Limos.
Finally they pulled up to the red carpet and Frederick stepped out and threw the keys to the valet. Then he opened the door for Sam and Mary. She stepped out holding onto Sam’s leash like she had been instructed.
Frederick let them walk a bit ahead so he could keep an eye on them and gauge how the crowds and press were going to react. Flashes went off in concert. He was glad that he had worn his sunglasses to the event.
As they walked along one of the press motioned him over. Lorde figured this was the chance he had been looking for. “Excuse me Mister Hollywood, Do you know that Eighty Eight is a symbol for the Anti-Mutant Movement? Is that why you are using that on your car?”
Frederick shook his head. Thinking this is why he could never have nice things. “No, That is a Delta 88, and well...” He pulled out his wallet and showed the blonde woman his Florida Driver’s License. “I was born on August the 8th.” Not wanting to miss his chance for one of those bullet points he continued on. “Hey, make sure you let people know Sato is about to do something major in the tech field. It is something for almost everyone.”
He continued his walk not wanting Mary to get real far ahead of him. He waved to the crowds and press. While it felt weird to him to play the part of some rich playboy he had taken enough acting to fake it.
The usher looked at their tickets and escorted them to their seats. Frederick was impressed with how Sam stayed ahead of Mary like he had been trained for this. After he sat down he whispered to the pair, “Hey I think Harrison Ford and Edward James Olmos are here up front.”
Mary whispered to Sam then looked at Lorde, “Oh yes the Star Wars and Miami Vice guys.”
Frederick could tell she had no idea what those things were, but he was impressed Sam knew and gave him an approving nod.
Everything seemed to go well enough. In fact when Joi was introduced in the movie Frederick joked about having to show the movie to Aryel. Then came the scene where a woman was murdered like an animal being slaughtered. Frederick had instinctively put his hand over his charges face but knew full well what it felt like to be in a movie theater with things like that going on. “Do you want to go, Mary?” After all her exposure to things like this had been a bit limited. This movie was far less like Star Wars. Sure the original had things not meant for little kids but nothing quite like that.
Mary shook her head. “I will be fine.” She had read about things in book that had been scary and in some of her books there was sex. Yes, what she was seeing was a bit disturbing, but no more than living hundreds of years in the future. “If you still need to cover my eyes Frederick, that will be fine also.” She smiled at him and ate more of the popcorn.
Sure Frederick ate some of the popcorn also, but he was a little let down by the lack of treats offered or ways to order something from the seats. Heck he knew of normal theaters that had all that and recliners and even in some cases couches. Although the tickets had been free there was no way of guessing how many hands Aryel had greased to get them. He just felt like he would have to take her to a better movie experience than this at some point like maybe IMAX or 3D.
When the movie ended and the trio started heading towards the door an usher walked up to them and asked if they would like to join the after party. Frederick had no real interest but looked at his companions after all this was their night as much as his. “So what do you think?”
Mary smiled and nodded, “If it is okay and Sam says he would love to try some champagne.”
Frederick pulled down his sunglasses looking at them both wondering if the cat had really said that. Then he looked back at the usher. “Well there you have it.”
