When they had reached Will;s car he said, “I almost forgot I’m going to need to get a sticker for my car, what time does the office close today?”
“Probably 5 not many people have cars here.”
“Well, this is Seattle after all. Not as bad as New York but it’s close. So what do you want to do after breakfast?”
“Probably lay in bed for a bit then go to work. We were up for quite a bit last night.”
“Yeah, we were. You aren’t complaining are you?”
Zach laughed really hard and deep, “No, no I am not.”
“Good, neither am I, but tonight, maybe we should, you know, try this novel thing called sleep, well sleep and cuddle maybe. Hould have you mind?”
“Well we could cuddle before I work which is what I was hoping for.”
“Cuddling gets my vote,” Will said as he started the car and drove out of the parking lot. “I’m going to get the rest of my stuff today. There’s not much, mostly my TV, which I figured could be in the other bedroom. What do you think?”
“I like that idea.” Zach said getting out his phone for directions.
“I’ve been there before, I think I know the way, but I haven’t been there from your… our place. So that might not be a bad idea. You know, getting directions.”
“Did I tell you what happened at Starbucksyesterday?”
“No what happened?”
“I’ve been going in there for almost as long as we’ve been together, maybe longer and I got to know this barista named Finn. Nice guy, and totally straight by the way and he didn’t show up for work, didn't call in sick or anything. And the new guy Chance, he was almost flirty. Sorta kinda. I just got to thinking about those other kids from school that have gone missing. And kind of got weirded out, like I don’t know someone was watching me. I know, that sounds like paranoia and I know it was just my imagination running wild, but it was still strange.”
“Sounds kind of creepy if I am honest.”
“Creepy like some weird shit is going on, or weird as in I should go see a shrink before I move in with you?”
“Like weird shit going on, though therapy is never a bad thing.”
“I’ve never really been, but… okay speaking of weird and changing the subject just a little, but do you want to do some kind of couples therapy? Not that we have any problems. Yet. But I know it’s not like some romance novel, sooner or later some shit is going to happen, and then who knows. But maybe if we start seeing someone before the shit hits the fan then we’ll know how to deal with it. Or is that just inviting trouble?”
That feels like we are admitting defeat in our relationship even though there is nothing wrong. But if we both went to therapy with different therapists I think we will have ways of dealing with it, plus I would help with whatever feelings I have about my parents that I even hide from myself.” Zach said setting his phone down on his leg while he started slouching.
“Speaking of which, what are you going to tell them about me? You said they were coming out in a couple of weeks.”
“Probably that you're my friend who lives with me, and if they visit we are going to have to move the couch into the office and say you stay on that.”
“Will let out a long sigh and he put a hand on Zach’s shoulder. “Look, it’s your life and I’ll go along with the charade for your sake and because I love you. But, that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I’m part of your life now, but it doesn’t feel like it when you have to hide who you are, what we are. I get where you’re coming from, but at some point the truth is going to come out, and what are you going to do then?”
“Probably run from it again but this time with you. I don’t know I am just so uncomfortable telling them that i’m gay especially since they are hard core Catholics.” Zach sighed as well, “I just don’t know how to deal with the rejection that they are going to give me.”
“You have me, you know that right? I’m not going to reject you. I’ll help you deal with it. That’s what a friend does and we’re more than just friends now.”
“I… I know it’s just hard, I don’t know how to explain it.” Zach said while running his hand through his hair and shaking his head.
Will focused on his driving for a few minutes as traffic was suddenly stopped and go, not an unusual occurrence even on a weekend morning “You don’t have to explain it you know.”
“Yeah, though sometimes I think it would help if I actually could.”
“I’m no psychiatrist,” Will said as he pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant, but do you want to try?”
“No, not right now at least, I believe the mentally healthy way of doing it would be in a controlled situation.”
“Okay, I get that,” Will said as he eased the car to a stop and unbuckled his seatbelt. “You have someone in mind to talk to?”
“That would also be a no, I'd have to look through my health insurance to see who is available,” Zach said as he stuffed his phone into his pocket and unbuckled his seatbelt.
“What about someone from school, you wouldn’t have to go through your health insurance then. Do you have your own, or are you on your parents?”
“The restaurant has good health insurance so I am on my own.”
“Then I’m cool with that. You have a driver’s license/’
“Yeah I do, I need it to work.”
“Good, I’ll get you a spare set of keys for the car. Is that okay?”
“That would actually be really nice, though I would rather just get my own car just so we didn’t have to share.”
”I wish I could help with that, but I don’t want to take any money from mom and dad. Not that they wouldn’t help, but I want to be on my own.”
“I know what you mean.”
“So, I guess you are on your own in that regard.”
“We’ll work our way toward it… Hopefully.”
“You can drive mine, ours until you get one, “ Will said as he walked up to front door and opened it holding it open for his boyfriend,
“Well thank you, my good sir,” Zach said.
Will’s fingers entwined with with Zach’s “That’s what boyfriends do right. I don’t really like wearing labels, but I like wearing that one.
A portly-looking woman greeted them with a smile. “Welcome to Geraldine’s,” she said. “Did you boys want to sit in a booth or at the counter?”
“Booth,” Will said, speaking for them both.
“What are you thinking of having?” Zach asked Will while looking over the menu.
“The corned beef hash, I’ve had it here a couple of times, it’s really good. What are you thinking?”
“You know I’m a sucker for french toast.”
“Yeah, I do,” Will replied, and I like how they make it here.’
The waitress took their order, which included apple juice for Will, and a coffee for Zach. “So, you want to talk about anything in particular?
“Nothing that serious, though how did going back to your roommates go yesterday.”
“Sam wasn’t all that happy about it, but at least he didn’t freak out about it. I avoided talking to the others, I guess we’ll find out when I go get the rest of my stuff.”
“Yeah, I guess then, that makes me kind of nervous if I am honest.”
“Why would that make you nervous?” Will asked as he dropped the menu and places his hand down on top of Zach’s, “what are they going to do?”
“I don’t know they might throw your stuff out, I've heard of some people do that.”
“They can be dicks, but they’re not like that. I mean we could wind up on Judge Judy, I suppose. That was a joke, they’ll be okay. Really.”
“Well, I’m gonna hope for that.”
Will looked into his boyfriend’s eyes. “It’s going to be okay Zach, it’s all going to be okay. Our lives are pretty dull and I kind of like it that way.”
“Yeah, I do too.”
Then Will leaned forward and stole a kiss as their drinks arrived. After taking a sip of his juice, he asked, “So, when did you come out, how was it like?”
“I didn’t, I just left before I really had to.”
“Not even to friends back home?”
“No there was a party I went to and I guess I felt up a guy and someone said they had shared pictures through the school, I don’t know if they did but lots of people were staring the day after, and well I just assumed, I finished school and just took my parents’ car and left and then sold the car to get a down payment here while I was also working.”
Will furrowed his brow. “Have you talked to them since then? What did they say about the car?”
“Well no I haven’t talked to them since other than when they sent the letter saying they were coming over, and as far as I can tell they didn’t report the car as stolen.”
“Do you think they have any idea you’re gay? That you have a boyfriend?”
“Probably not.”
“How long has it been since you’ve seen them?”
“Probably two years, maybe two and a half.”
“So why now? Why are they contacting you now?”
“I don’t actually know it was just really weird.”
Their food arrived at that point and they started eating.
“I know this may seem like a weird question, but talking about our parents, kind of brought it up. Do you want to have kids, someday? When you settle down with Mr. Right.”
“I don’t know I’ve never really thought about it.”
“I have, a little. I think I’d like to. Someday, but they’re a lot of responsibility and I’d have to make very sure. Not like a pet. Speaking of that, do you want a dog or something?”
“A dog would be great, or really any animals.”
“What kind of dog would you want?”
“Well, black labs are nice and comforting or a pitbull they are also really nice and comforting.”
“What if we went to the shelter here and find one tomorrow, or maybe Tuesday? Or is that too quick?”
“Well, that is a little too fast because I need to let the office know that we are gonna get a dog also the money we would have to pay for having the dog.”
“Well then, we can wait, at least till we get back from New York. We can talk about it more then.”
“Well, that would be a good idea, especially since we’ll be traveling soon.”
“And Hawaii, I guess we should put it off. Changing the subject again, “Hawaii. What island do you want to go to?”
“Dealers choice? And maybe we won’t have to if we are going, first class.”
“I think it would be too expensive to go there, first class. We’re paying for it. And you really don’t get much out of it if you go to more than one. I say check out the Big Island and camp out most of the time. Are you much of a camper?”
“No, I wasn’t really fond of it when my parents forced me to when I was younger.”
“Okay, then we forget the camping idea then. What about finding a Bed and Breakfast?”
“That I actually like, a nice time away could do some reading on a balcony,” Zach trailed on.
“Yeah, that would be fun. You ever been to a beach?”
“Nope unless you think a lake has a beach then yes.”
“I’ve been on a beach or two at a lake, but it’s not the same thing. We’re going to have fun though.”
“Yeah I bet.”
“You know,” Will said with a snap of his fingers. “My parents, on their honeymoon, stayed at this place called Aloha Junction, I think it’s still open. Not saying that we’re getting married or anything, but how does that sound to you?
“Sounds good, are you wanting to get a honeymoon suite? Is that what you were saying?”
“It wasn’t,” Will admitted, but that’s actually a pretty good idea. I’d be willing to pay extra for it, if it were available.”
“It probably will be,” Zach said as he was holding his coffee then taking a sip.
“You know, I am really enjoying this whole boyfriend thing. You’re the first guy I’ve wanted to be in a long-term relationship with for a long time.”
“Really not many kids like me out in New York?”
“I was with this guy, David, I told you about him. What I didn’t tell you was that his parents didn’t like me. They thought I’d turned their good, God-fearing son, gay. That I’d seduced him. That didn’t happen. He came on to me, not the other way around.”
“”I wondered how they came up with that bullshit, but then I found out. He told them. Scared, trying to cover his ass, I don’t know. But, I felt betrayed. I would have rather he’d cheated on me. That I could at least understand. But, he broke it off and said… said some hurtful things. So, I went through this period where I’d fuck or get fucked by anyone willing. I thought that’s what you were going to be. Just another fuck. But, I was wrong. You’ve become a lot more than that. There are lots of guys with a cute face and a tight ass, but there was no one that I could trust until now. No one wanted to fall in love and be with for a long time. But I trust you and I, I’m in love with you.”
“I… I’m in love with you too” Zach said as he smiled, taking another sip of his coffee hiding his face a little.
Will took a sip of his own coffee and lifted Zach’s chin with his finger. “What’s up?” he asked, his dark eyes staring into the other man’s face.
“I haven’t said it to anyone before,” Zach said.
The smile on Will’s face widened.and he leaned across the table and kissed his boyfriend, “You have no idea, how that makes me feel,” he said after the kiss had broken. “It makes me love you even more.”
“That is so sweet,” Zach said blushing and smiling.
“What time do you have to be at work again?”
“2” Zach said while looking around for where the food was going to come from.
“Do we have time to make a stop at the mall first?”
“Why yes of course, dear.” Zach said with a slight smirk.
Will chuckled.”I’m going to make you pay for that, you know that right?” he asked giving back the smirk.
Zach winked slightly as the food arrived.
The two didn’t talk much until after they’d completed their meal.
“You ready...dar? Will asked with a wink as he slid a five dollar bill under his cup for a tip, “I want to surprise you.”
“Dar? That’s already a surprise but yeah lets go.” Zach said while also sliding a five dollar bill under Will’s cup.
“Damn,” Will responded with a face palm, ”I should have left her more. Thanks for the save, “I’m going to go pay at the cashier stand. Do you want to come with me or meet me at the car?”
“Depends on what you are getting.”
“I’m just paying for the food.”
“Oh I thought you meant the mall.”
“No, I want you there with me when I get that. I’m just not telling what it is until we get there.”
“Well then I'll come with you.”
They paid for the food and got in Will’s truck.”I'm not exactly sure if this will work out, or not. I just thought of it and didn't have a chance to plan anything out,” Will said to him as they drove out of the parking lot.
“Well then this is going to be really interesting, would you want to describe it to me or am I going to be completely in the dark about this?”
“In the dark. I can’t really give you a hint, it would just give it away. And I want you to really be surprised.”
Zach started smirking and shaking his head, “Ok then.”
Will had been lying to Zach about where he was planning on going, or more accurately, he . saw the type of store he was looking for before they got to the mall. Jared’s Jewelers He drove past it at first then made a sharp turn onto a side street, then into the building’s parking lot,
“This is it,” he said as he put the SUV into a parking space, “Well, here we are,” he said.”No
“Should I wait here?”
”No, I want you to come in. You need to help me pick the gift out. It works better that way, I think.”
“Uh ok.” Zach said, now visibly confused.
Will got out of the car, opened Zach’s door for him and took his hand. “Come on, inside.”
“Ok thank you sir.”
They stepped inside the establishment and were greeted by a middle-aged, some what portly, woman wearing a salesman smile who if she noticed them holding hands, didn’t indicate it.
“What could I do for you gentlemen?”
“We’d like to look at promise rings,” Will said,.
“Wedding bands you mean?”
Will shook his head and glanced in Zach’s direction
“No we mean promise rings.” Zach offered a forced smile to the woman. Then whispered to Will, “Promise rings?”
“Give us a minute,” Will said to the sales clerk, as he pulled Zach to the side.”I’m not proposing marriage, just commitment. Long term. We don’t have to, if you don’t want to,but I want everyone to know that we’re a couple.”
“And, uh, when your parents come, we can put them away if you want. What do you think?”
“Well we could just say that they are friendship rings, and I think that it is fine for us to have rings for commitment.”
“Sorry,” Will said as he turned to face the woman. “I’m sorry, this a surprise.”
“No worries,” the woman said, not missing a beat, “you’re good, Come over here and I’ll show you what we have.”
The couple walked over to a display case and after they had looked things over for about five minutes she asked, “Do you see anything you like?”
“That piece over there looks really nice.” Zach said as he pointed to one of the rings.
“The silver one, she asked, ‘with the two stones?’
“Yes that one.”
“Great craftsmanship, you have a good eye. The stones are cubic zuronialinan and the ruby is artificial, but no one has to know that. We can even get them engraved if you like. Together, they're $500/ Is that doable for you.”
Will turned and faced his lover. “You sure that’s the one you want?”
"Jeez, is there a payment plan for it?" Zach asked as his jaw clenched.
“You could put it on credit, it’s pretty easy to qualify,” the sales clerk said hopefully.
Will squeezed Zach’s upper arm, “It’s okay Zach, I’ve got this.” He knew his parents would have happily paid for them, it was less than they charged for an hour of their work and he was tempted, just for a moment, to call and ask them/”I’ll try to open one.”
She pulled out a tablet, glanced at Zach, then began to get Will’s personal information.
“It’s okay Zack, it’s just money, right?”
“R-right,” Zach said nervously.
“No, I take that back,” Will said. “It’s more than money, it’s about my, our commitment to each other, so I’m willing to spend that money, because it’s you.”
“Aw thank you.”
“You’re welcome. What can I say?”
The clerk looked up from her pad. “You’re approved for up to 1,000. Dollars.”
“Just the rings is fine. How long wiltt it take to engrave them?’
“About twenty minutes or so. Maybe thirty, You can wait if you want. Oh and what do you want them to say?”
Will turned to Zach. “Well?”
“Uh, ‘I love you’? Maybe?”
“Let’s do this. Mine will say ‘I love Zach’ and yours ;I love Will’ Would that work?”
“Oh yeah that sounds amazing.”
“You know what else is amazing?” Will asked. “This.”
Then he leaned in and kissed the other man, the clerk responding with a smirk.
Zach started blushing and laughed a little, “Will we’re in public you can’t make out with me like that.”
“It was just a kiss.we’re hardly making out. Would you like me to show you making out?”
Zach started blushing really hard now, “N-no.”
Will held up both his hands in mock surrender.. “Relax, you know I would never do that to you.”
After Will had signed for the rings, the clerk said, “We do have these in stock like I thought. So, if you two want to wait over there, we’ll have these done in a jiffy.”
“Oh good.”
“Serious question for you Zach. This is 2021, we live in Seattle. Why does my kissing you in public embarrass you?”
“Habit from home small Catholic town kissing in public was shamed and being gay was worse, there was a gay couple who stopped in the town for gas and there car was defaced.”
“Fuck, I’m sorry. It’s just I love you and I want people to know about it. But, if you're okay with it. I’ll stop. The last thing I want to do is make you feel uncomfortable.”
“Well I think I'll learn to like it. Or at least learn how to suppress my feelings about PDA.”
Will nodded “ Compromise then. I won’t push too hard, you don’t resist too hard until we decide what we will and won’t do in public. How about that?”
“Sounds good hun.”
Fifteen minutes later the rings were done and the two college students now wore them, walked out. “You want me to drop you off at work?”
“Yeah that would be nice.”
“I’ve got to study, but I can try to pick you up. Just not sure. When are you supposed to get off?”
“Probably 10pm.”
“I'll text you if I can make it. How about that?’
“Sounds good.”
