Mission: The Factions
Location: Kentucky Federal Prison
Timeline: Present

Dinner time rolled around and the block was abnormally quiet as almost all the other units in B had gone to dinner. Andy had been true to his word. Twenty four pizzas had been delivered. Some pepperoni, cheese, veggi, and even a couple with no cheese. The Pizza had also come with several two liters of soda of various types. A boombox played some Ozzy from the local classic rock station. Not everyones favorite but no one complained just yet. All of this was laid out on the unit dining table. The Commissioner and his main squeeze had taken up residence on the couch. They looked less interested in the pizza and more interested in each other.

Elliot and Marco hung towards the edge of the crowd. After all that happened, he had wanted to just go back to his cell, but he had the idea that spurning Andy’s “gift” wouldn’t be ideal. Plus, he should be there for Marco. Marco seemed about as uneasy about it as he was about anything, the normally talkative man now only making small-talk, both him and Elliot each holding a slice of pepperoni pizza.

The music played on and the pizza was eaten by most with great vigor. Many were happy just not to be eating hot dogs and beans again for dinner. The normally quiet and reserved Adam even commented to his neighbor, “Dude I haven’t had pizza since Jake left.” He lifted a glass of Pepsi in Andy’s direction. He then returned to banging his long black hair to “Frayed Ends of Sanity.”

“So-” Marco said, asking the question he’d been holding in all night. “What did the Warden want with you?”

Elliot shrugged, just watching the pizza. Strange - a pizza party without (unhidden) alcohol. It reminded him of some twisted, alternate dimension version of a middle school pizza party. The people were about as nice as well. “Frankly, I’m not sure,” the man admitted after a moment. “It was some weird law student. I’m not sure whether it was a prank or a social experiment. Was asking me stuff about my case. Either way, nice to hang out in the visitation room for a couple hours.”

The main lights shut off signaling it was time for bed. Most at the party took an extra piece of pizza and headed off to their rooms. Andy and Jimmy stayed on the couch seeming oblivious to the lockdown in their minds the prison was already far away. Someone turned the music down hoping the guards wouldn’t get too riled up about that.

Elliot let out a small sigh, glad this party was over. Normally, he wouldn’t have minded - no, he might have liked, such a party, but not with Andy’s presence looming over it. If only the man had managed to stay out of his sight a little longer. Elliot quickly ate the rest of his pizza slice - it was his third slice, to be fair, he wasn’t wasting the opportunity for food - before heading back towards his cell with Marco in tow.

A little while later raised voices could be heard in the main area of the unit. “I told you to go back too your room faggot! I will deal with your shit later.” The gruff voice could only be Officer Tombs. “Where the Hell is my money Andy! Been a week and still more excuses from your ass?”

Elliot glanced up, laying on his bunk, but set his head back down, pretending not to hear. He didn’t want to get involved in somebody else’s business. Marco, on the other bunk, didn’t even appear to move. The man was either a heavy sleeper or very good at pretending to be one.

Suddenly Andy started yelling, “Put me down man!” He sounded really scared, “You can’t do this, you work here n all!”

“Well if I don’t make an example out of you, every Jackass in this prison is gonna think they can run shit through here without paying the tariff.” Then Tombs laughed, no one ever heard him laugh. “It’s okay Andy you’re getting paroled early!”

Then the door to Elliot’s cell exploded off its hinges and flew through the back wall. Andy was on it like some macabre artwork. His head was flattened and sprayed all over the door and partially around the cell. Tombs walked up to the cell door and looked right at Elliot, “Say shit and your next, got it?”

“Yeah,” Elliot said. He had jumped up at the event, and now sat huddled at the far side of his bed, eyes wide. He nodded with fear and desperation. “I got it.”

Marco had awoken as well, and while Elliot was staring at Tombs, Marco was looking at Andy’s body, speechless.

As Tombs walked away the alarm started to sound, signaling a full lockdown for all units. “Check your boy Wren.” the officer said in the distance, “Or that's gonna be on you too!’

The CERT Team showed up as well as a doctor. They told everyone to get out of their cells and leave everything behind. Everyone was checked and body searched before being placed into solitary confinement while the team did forensics.

Elliot was too shaken to even mind the solitary. In fact, a part of him was glad for it. What had happened back there? Of course he wouldn’t speak. He followed rules but he wasn’t a suicidal idiot. He had warned Marco of the same. Andy was a bad guy. But he didn’t deserve that. Quite literally - a court had looked over his crimes and decided them not worthy of death. Yet he was dead. Somebody here was no longer playing by the rules and it was only by hiding behind the rules that Elliot could protect himself. The man gave just the smallest whimper, wondering if he would be next. Was it just bad luck that it was his cell right there?

A guard came to the man’s cell and rapped on it with his baton. “Okay, Wren the Police want to talk to you. They need a statement.” He unlocked the cell, opened the door, and waited in the hallway.

Elliot nodded, obedient as always. The man stood up, using the wall to steady himself, before walking out into the hallway. “Do you know what happened back there?” He asked the guard.

“Fuck if I know buddy. It looks like someone detonated an IED or something. Has anyone told you Marco is in the infirmary? Look like the door nicked him in the head or something so last I heard they are checking him for a concussion.” The young officer shrugged and continued walking his charge along to the interrogation rooms.

About halfway there, up ahead of them, Elliot could see Tombs walking up the hallway. “Hey Tom, they need you in the Warden’s Office. I will bring Wren down to see the police.”

Tom nodded, “Alright man, are we on for cards on Sunday?”

“You know it Brother.” Tombs started leading Elliot towards the interrogation rooms. “Now I know after what happened to Marco you might feel like singing, but he ain’t dead yet. More importantly neither are you. Just keep that in mind and everything will go just fine. Oh and before you start morning Andy, try and remember who he was on the outside.” Tombs opened the door to the room and let Elliot through
