The large warehouse that Carter led the two girls to was very large and it didn't take them long to find the transformed Van.
It was larger than Jaclyn seemed to remember. She frowned. "Are you sure I did this?" She asked Kai and Carter. "There is no way.."
"Yup," Kai replied. "You went all glowy and floaty and lightning was around you and the van changed into that. You were going to fry the Reverend but the Headmistress wouldn't let you," Kai added as she moved towards the mech. "There was a latch under the windshield."
Jaclyn sighed softly and followed her to the van. She looked up. "Kai, climbing up there is going to be a painful experience."
Kai shrugged. "Maybe but it's how we got down."
Jaclyn frowned and walked around the mech-van and slowly reached out to touch it.
Carter looked at the currently inert mech. He thought it was one of the coolest things he had seen in a while. "I'll lift you up, Kai, if you want?"
Kai shook her head. “No thanks been up there done that” she said.
Jaclyn meanwhile was running a hand over the mech gently, her gaze sweeping it, in amazement of what she had created.
“Hey! Might want to be careful there!” A large, blonde-haired man in a dark blue academy jumpsuit called over to the kids standing at the mech. As he approached, he continued, “That thing has more problems than a monkey with a maths book!”
Jaclyn jolted back and stared at the man in shock. “S-Sorry” she got out her head ducking.
Kai seemed even more fazed and moved to stand partially behind Jaclyn.
Carter turned his gaze towards the approaching staff member. "It's okay, Jimmy, they're with me. Mom asked me to give them a tour and they said they wanted to get some of their stuff from the storage bin here in the chest of their mech."
Jimmy smiled at Carter, then gave the other two a nod of his head. “So you’re the one that did this? Sorry, it’s just not that safe after what it went through, whatever that was. Here, let me get you a ladder, or something.” He moved quickly to the nearest rolling ladder and brought it over, talking loudly as he did, his voice bounding in the large, open bay, “I’ve seen some neat stuff here, but who really expects to see a van turned into a mech? I mean, the materials obviously can’t stand up to whatever you did to it, but with the right materials, I bet this thing could be pretty wicked.”
Jaclyn gave a half shrug. “I guess.”
Kai nodded. “It was pretty cool after I got out of it.” she said softly.
Jaclyn waited for the ladder to be put in place, “Thank you,.” she said and began to climb up the ladder to the opened windshield. “Kai, do you want to help or stay down there?”
Kai handed Carter the leash of Artemis and followed Jaclyn up the ladder. “I’ll help” she said.
Jac nodded and slid into the ‘cockpit’ and then slowly lowered herself down into the mech. “What a mess” they heard her say.
“I did try to warn ya!” The blonde warehouse worker stood at the bottom, watching as the girls climbed. He then looked over at Carter with a grin. “You think they’re gonna stay? It would be kind of badass to see if she can fix this thing up somehow, get it running again. Could you imagine this thing running around the academy?”
Carter grinned. "I hope so," he replied a bit faster than he probably should have. Blushing, he nodded. "Yeah…it would be pretty cool."
From inside the mech, Jaclyn was sorting out things. The two girls were chatting away and then a bag appeared at the top of the Mech, out of the windshield. Kai popped up with it and placed it on the ladder.
She then vanished back into the mech.
Jaclyn meanwhile was packing up her clothes into the two duffles she had and storing her laptop bag. She fished out a hoodie and shrugged it on. She hunted around and found her ipod and ear buds and stored them in the pocket of the hoodie and then she finished packing her clothes into the bags. She studied the boxes of items and sighed. Too much for her to carry on her own right now, so she would take the important documents and her school books with her clothes and then come back later. She looked up at Kai who was picking up the dog’s things and placing them in a bag. “Ready?” she asked as she looped the laptop bag around her neck and grabbed the two bags.
Kai nodded and climbed back to the entrance. “What about the rest of your stuff?”
“I have everything important.” Jaclyn replied. Her mother’s jewellery and her cash reserves were all in the backpack she slung on to her back, hidden among the school books.
Kai continued up and soon was sliding out of the cab of the mech. Jaclyn followed a bit slower, taking her time to look around the inside of the mech as she did so. Soon enough though she had climbed out and hauled out the two duffle bags and followed Kai down the ladder. She pushed the sleeves of the hoodie down her arms as she reached the bottom of the ladder. She looked at Jimmy. “There are still things inside, is it okay if I come back later?”
The staffer thought about it, then nodded. "Sure thing, young lady. Just, next time, come see the staffer on duty, so we can help you if needed, okay?"
Jac nodded. "Will do thank you."
"May I help you with those bags?" Carter asked respectfully, he was taught to always be a gentleman.
Kai grinned and handed him Artemis’s bag but Jaclyn shook her head and carried her own bags.
“I am fine,” she said softly.
Carter smiled at Kai, taking the small bag. As he did, Artemis seemed very interested to be near him. He tilted his head towards the door. "This way. I'll take you to the dorm, and your rooms." He then turned and led them out of the warehouse, thanking Jimmy on their way out.
Artemis followed him, even though Kai had the leash back. Kai followed along looking around.
Jaclyn didn’t look around, she looked at the ground and followed. She really needed alone time.
As they moved into the Academy quad, they saw dozens of fellow Meta's, all at different ages, studying and playing alongside human children. Nowhere was anyone being mistreated in any way.
"So this is the Quad. It's where we like to hang out usually, though sometimes, the professors will move their class outside."
Kai looked around as she walked. “So what classes do you guys take?” She asked curiously.
"The same courses that are taught in every other primary, secondary and university out there. Plus, we also have courses to help us learn the importance of using our abilities for the betterment of all of humankind, homosapien and Metasapian alike."
Real school to Kai would be great, not some half day rule that Monica had put in for her. She had barely had enough time for study let alone a full day at school and she liked school. She liked learning history and such. “Sounds nice” she said, slanting a look at Jaclyn.
Jaclyn was not really paying attention as she followed along.
A few moments later, Carter indicated they had arrived. "This is it! Your names are already listed here." He pointed out the ornately carved name placard that contained both of their names in exquisite script.
The dorm room Carter showed them to was on the same floor as others in the high school age group. Even though Kai was not in that age group, she was with Jaclyn thus, they were kept together.
Jaclyn opened the door and waved Kai in first.
Kai looked around the small living area and smiled brightly before darting into the first of the two bedrooms. She moved quickly in and then out and then into the second room before spinning around and into the shared bathroom.
Jaclyn’s lips were curved into a small smile as she watched the younger girl. Her room at the compound was just bare walls and an old spring frame bed. Even Jac’s room had been better. These rooms are a luxury to her.
Kai came out of the bedroom and grinned at Jac and Carter. "Which one do you want?" She asked Jaclyn.
"Whichever you don't want. You pick first Kai." Jaclyn replied.
Kai considered then walked to the first room. "This one."
Jac nodded "Perfect." It was, she supposed. For now anyway. And she knew Kai needed reassurance. It was like having a sister again. Jac had not had a sister since Kelly had left the family home shortly after their father brought his girlfriend home.
Now that Kai had chosen, Jaclyn put her two duffles into the second room while Kai hauled her bag into the first.
Artemis was sniffing around the suite.
Carter stayed in the common area, not wanting to make either girl uncomfortable. "If you both want to get cleaned up and changed, we could meet up later in the quad. I could continue your tour if you'd like?"
As Jaclyn placed her laptop bag on the small desk in the second room, she turned and nodded at Carter. “That might be an idea, thank you Carter.” She said, she shrugged off the backpack and shoved her hands into the pockets of the hoodie she now wore.
Nodding to her, Carter gave Jaclyn a friendly grin, then reached down and scratched Artemis behind her ears when she trotted over to him. "Then I'll see you later. Pizza should be here around five, five-thirty. There will be plenty of food, so don't worry about it disappearing on either of you." He then turned and moved to the door leading out in the hall. As he started to close it, he paused, then looked back in.
"By the way, if you need anything, my room is three down on the right." He flashed her a handsome, toothy grin again, then quietly closed their door, leaving both teens alone for the first time since they arrived.
